In Class Opera – A Wonderful Excercise In Teaching Elementary Students To Communicate

Published May 17, 2012 11:15am

As is often the case, a Parrothead friend from Salt Lake City sent me a link to a wonderful story about elementary students creating and performing an opera with an anti-bullying message. The students wrote the script, created and painted the sets and chose their lead actors.  I could spend some more words but I suggest that you check out the link and read it for yourself.

Do You See The Difference Between Teasing And Bullying

Published May 16, 2012 2:22pm

Lately, I’ve been reading a series of research articles on the psychological damage suffered by children who are victimized by bullies. I’ve been trying to understand the mindset of a pre-teen child who would think that there was no way out of the pain, other than taking her own life.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Whether you are being treated like a Queen today or who knows… Maybe you’re dealing with a weekend household disaster like a plumbing flood or even a hospital visit with a sick child, I hope you know that you are appreciated!

Thousands of songs have been written about you “Mom”, from Johnny Cash to rappers. The thought of you brings strength and comfort to soldiers in the field and some day will bring these same things to rebellious teenagers, even if they don’t know it yet.

Some times life can feel like a battle and some times it’s just showing up, being the one who’s driving the car with the sports team in it, or the one chairing a meeting as the CEO of your own company, after you’ve driven the sports team.

Studies show women have a higher pain threshold than men. Whatever the case, we know you do a lot and handle a lot that frankly would make our heads spin. Before I start sounding like I’m opting for a spot on some incarnation of Oprah or bidding for a script on the Lifetime channel, let me just say, Thanks mom! I am your son, and I’m grateful for that.

Here are the lyrics to a song I’ve written and not yet recorded call “Mama”. It’s for all of you mom’s out there, fighting the good fight. It’s time to celebrate who you are to all of us

Mama, I am amazed
You give it your all every day
And Mama, No one could replace
What you did what you do what you say
and Mama, I can never repay, there’s no way

So mama ma ma mama You are the Star today
They can’t take that away
Mama ma ma mama it’s time to celebrate
Cause it’s your da ay ay ay.

Mama, I apologize
Did it I make it harder on you?
Mama, We may not see eye to eye
We are all doin’ the best we can do
Mama, (I want you to hear) I’m on your side and it’s all right

So mama ma ma mama You are the Star today
No one can take that away
Mama ma ma mama it’s time to celebrate
Cause it’s your da ay ay ay.

Uncle Jim Talks About The Power Of The Bystander In A Bullying Situation

Published May 12, 2012 7:15am

Bullies Are Influenced By The CrowdIn the anti-bullying dialogue in the country today, the focus is usually on the aggressor or the victim. While this is an important focus we must not overlook the third leg of the bullying stool, the bystander. I’ve run across statistics that seem to show that at least two out of three school age children have witnessed a bullying event.

Teen Girls Can Play RoughI just finished reading an interesting story originally published at one of my hometown (St. Louis) television stations (KSDK) profiling a young woman who had bee a self-proclaimed bully. Kiana McKinley, a 20-year-old woman is now a volunteer for SistaKeeper, mentoring girls who are struggling with those same self-esteem issues she once faced.
